Now: Western Learning Machine Learning

Update for 2026

I hope you enjoyed a special Christmas and New Year season!

For me, with a bit more time on my hands lately, I’ve been split between learning and exploring.

Learning

I’ve set myself two main goals:

  • Machine Learning - Going through the Google Machine Learning crash course
  • Kubernetes - Filling the gaps of my Kubernetes knowledge by studying towards the CKA exam

Machine Learning has definitely taken the front seat after seeing a ML Intern role pop up in Europe 🤞

Back in 2023, someone suggested I pivot into an MLOps Engineer role. They reckoned my background in DevOps, programming and infrastructure would give me a solid head start. So I've decided to give it a proper go.

Exploring

We recently signed up to Trusted House Sitters, a site where you can stay somewhere free in exchange for looking after people’s pets. Just wrapped up our first sit and got a five‑star review, which should make things easier when we eventually head off to Europe!

A mate then suggested trying one of those motorhome relocations, so we’re picking one up in Christchurch and driving it all the way back to Auckland. It only costs $1 a day, with an option to add an extra day for a small fee. All up for 5 days, it’s about $187 for the extra day plus flights (which were on sale for $98), and they even cover the ferry crossing. Pretty sweet deal, really.
